ABSTRACT

This study assessed productivities of small  holders cassava farmers in Ohafia Local Government Area in Abia State for the study, 90 cassava producer were selected using simple random technique. Data for the study were collected through the use of well-structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages, tables and frequencies distribution, total factor productivity and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression methods. The regression result obtained revealed that the coefficients of age, fertilizer, access to credit, education and extension contact were positive and significant and are important determinants of the productivity in cassava production despite all the numerous problems encountered. From this study it is recommended that since fertilizer has a positive significant effect on TFP in cassava production, that the ministry cf agriculture should deploy agents to the study area for thorough distribution of fertilizer to the farmers, Ministry of education should reinforce educational programme in the rural areas which will include audit education, since level of education was one of the determinants of I'FP, improving the level of education, cassava farmers will increase th growth of TFP in cassava production in the study area Ministry of agriculture in Abia State should deploy extension agents to the study area for well and thorough extension services because 90% of the cassava farmers have never had extension visit. Government should provide policies that will change the pattern of land holding provide good access roads, ad quate capital and security in the study area. This will reduce pilfering of the cassava fann product and delay in sales of cassava production.
