Determinants Of Productivity Among Melon Farmers In Umuahia South Local Government Area, State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to access
the determinant of productivity among melon farmers in Umuahia South Local
Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. Multistage sampling technique was used
in selecting 50 respondents using questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive
statistics and multiple regression analysis. Result showed that most (52.00%)
of melon farmers were male and 66 .00% were married with a mean age of 44
years. About 8.5% of the respondents did not have formal education while 6.7%
attended primary school. The mean year of farming was 21 year. Most (75.30%) of
the respondent relied on hired labour for their farm operations. The average
melon output was 68.82%. Major constraint to productivity of melon was pest and
diseases, limited extension services support (mean 94.00) and shelling device
(mean 36.2). Result of the OLS regression shows that the coefficient of age and
household size are negatively signed and significant at 5%. The coefficient for
gender was negatively signed and significant at 10%.The result call for
policies aimed at encouraging the youth who are stronger and more agile to
produce melon. There is need also for birth control policies to reduce
household size.
