ABSTRACT

Studies on growing Pleurotus sp (PIT) on rice straw and plantain leaves have been carried out. The culture medium used was malt extract Agar (MEA) which was prepared according to standard laboratory practice. Millet grain and saw dust were used for the preparation of spawn. Bulk substrate packed in perforated buckets was pasteurized by steam, inoculated at 5% spawn and incubated at room temperature fOr three weeks before primordia emerged and'developed into fruitbodies. Rice straw substrate gave higher yield than plantain leaves. There were significant differences between the fruitbody formation, weight of fruitbodiés and diameter of the pileus formed on rice straw and plantain leaves.
