ABSTRACT
Pleurotus pulmonarius mushroom was grown on different plant
waste products such as vertivar grass, banana leaves and rice straw with the
main objective of comparing the growth and yield of this mushroom on different
substrates. The culture medium used was molt extract agar (M. E.A) which was
prepared according to standard laboratory practice. Inoculation of pure culture
was done under sterile conditions. The spawn was produced on clean wet and
sterile millet grain (pennisetum typhoides). Incubation of the bulk culture was
carried out at elevated humidity in a mushroom house at ambient temperature.
Fructification started three weeks after inoculation. The primordial matured
into fruitbodies in 3-4 days and harvested. The data collected were used for
statistical analysis to investigate the substrates that has highest yield of
fruitbodies. From the results, the best yield came from rice straw and banana
leaves with the total number of 64 and lowest number came from vertivar grass
with the total number of 36.
