Contribution of Nigerian Libraries in the Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge:- C. A. Okoro,
Abstract
To
serve as reservoirs ofknowledge, Nigerian libraries need to harness, process,
preserve and make accessible indigenous knowledge which traps much information
that can bringprogress to the society. The paper, therefore, through extensive
review of literature, highlights the need for indigenous knowledge. It examines
the contributions oflibraries towards the promotion of indigenous knowledge in
Nigeria. It also emphasizes the needfor libraries to evolve measures that will
facilitate promotion of indigenous knowledge such as the adoption of hybrid
library arrangement and information re-packaging. Challengesfacing â– Nigerian
libraries in promoting indigenous knowledge are discussed The paper made some
recommendationsfor Nigerian libraries to adopt in the promotion ofindigenous
knowledge. The recommendations include, among others, that libraries especially
the public, academic, and national should up-grade their ICT facilities,
audio-visualresources, andotherindigenous knowledge management equipment and
tools tofacilitate recording, storage anduse ofindigenous knowledge.
