Comparative Quality Evaluation of Traditionally Produced Palm Kernel Oil from Different Locations:- Nwankwo Chinenye

ABSTRACT

A compositional analysis of five (S) palm kernel samples from different locations namely: Ika local government area in Akwa Ibom, Abakiliki in Ebonyi state, Abala in Obingwa, Ude Ofemc in Umuahia and Osisioma in Osisioma local government area, were done and their values compared. The parameters analysed were the physical properties evaluation. which showed that Ude Ofeme palm kernel oil sample had the highest insoluble impurity value or 5.77%, closely_ followed by Osisioma sample of 5.60%. Akwa lbom sample had the least impurity value of 4.13%. This sample (PKO) li·om /\kwa ibom was purest or all the live samples by 28.42%. This same sample had the lowest pl l value of 5.67, indicating that the Akwa Ibom sample by this consideration showed the greatest short - chained fatty acid content. It superseded the other four samples by about I 7.95%. Also, the palm kernel oil sample from Abala had the lowest moisture content value of 0.21 %, followed by Akwa lbom sample of 0.22%. And the palm kernel oil sample from Abakiliki had the lowest viscosity value of 505.80 kg/m/s followed by Ude Ofeme sample of 515.00 kg/m/s and there was significant difference (p<0.05) between the five samples. The sample differed in their physicochemical and functional properties and their variation in general acceptance. Microorganisms isolated were Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus species, Bacillus species and Candida albicans
