ABSTRACT
This study
was undertaken to determine the anti-anaemic potential of these three (3) plant
extracts in phenyl hydrazine induced anaemia in albino rats. Twenty five albino
rats were randomly divided into 5 groups of 5 rats each. Group 1 being the
normal control was fed with standard rat diets and water , group 2 (50 mg /kg
phenylhydrazine ), group 3 (50 mg / kg PH + 1000 mg / kg Jatropha tanjorensis},
group 4(50 mg / kgPH +1000mg/kg Vernonia amygdalina), and group 5 (50 mg / kgPH
+ lOOOmg/kg Pterocarpus santalinoides). The rats were induced with anaemia by a
two-day oral administration of phenyl hydrazine for 7 days, while the rats were
treated with the leaf extracts for 14 days. After 28 days, the rats were
sacrificed, the serum collected and used for haematology analysis. From the
results obtained, the Red Blood Cell(RBC), Packed Cell Volume(PCV) and
Haemoglobin(HB) concentration values of Pterocarpus santalinoides and Jatropha
tanjorensis increased to (3.74±0.31, 3.46±0.08), (25.88±1.89, 23.93±0.52)
and(16.02±1.49, 16.08±0.22) while the Vernonia amygdalina had the least
activity with 2.58±0.44RBC, 19.00±2.71PCV and 13.60±l.lIHB.Also the White Blood
Cell(WBC) of the 31eaf extracts increased significantly to 54.56±15.70,
35.82±4.05 and 49.74±0.83 when compared to the normal and anaemic control. The
extracts ofNturukpa and hospital too far caused an increase in the body weight
of the anaemic rats ranging from 108.40±1.50 -122.66±1.90 and 111.84±2.95
-120.82±3.46 while that of bitter leaf was 110.12±3.58 -111.54±3.63.Therefore
from this present study, Pterocarpus santalinoides and Jatropha tanjeronsis
possessed more blood boosting potentials than Vernonia amygdalina.
