Comparative Economic Analysis Of Turkey And Broiler Production In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike
ABSTRACT
The study carried out a comparative analysis of turkey and boiler production in the Overstock farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. More specifically the study analyzed the relative costs and returns, and the profitability of broiler and turkey production. Using the production function approach, the study also analyzed the determinants of production and resource use efficiency in broiler production only. Production data for a total of 7800 broiler and 1800 turkey birds produced in a period of two years were culled from the farm records. While the data on broiler production were recorded on weekly basis, those on turkey production were made available on annual basis. Thus, the data on turkey production could not allow for production function analysis. The study reveals that turkey enterprise is more profitable than broiler enterprise as evident in their gross margin of Nl,922,031 for turkey and N724,630 for broilers birds', respectively. The study also reveals that the major contributing factor to expenditure in the enterprises were feeds and cost of day old chicks. Other contributory factors are labour, medication, utilities and depreciation. The result of the resource use efficiency analysis shows that feeds, medication and labour were over utilized.
