ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to ascertain the characteristics and causes of internal migration in south east Nigeria using Onitsha as a case study. Data was collected from 76 respondents by the use of well structured questionnaires distributed in 3 areas which was selected. The collected data was analyzed using the probity model, semi-log regression model, linear regression model and some descriptive statistics. The result showed that majority o the respondents are migrants from the rural area and this indicates that rural-urban migration is the major type of internal migration. This occurs as a result of basic infrastructures needed to improve the living conditions of the nun I dwellers I hereby pushing I hem into the urban areas in search of greener pastures and better lifis1ylcs. The study demands that the Government should dispense with their altitude towards the Rural areas aid maintain a more sympathetic posture to restructure the rural areas by providing modern facilities, improvement of living conditions, facilitation of training In the areas that are most beneficial to the rural economy and finally provision of credit which would permit the expansion of enterprises to produce more profit and generate more income and employment.
