ABSTRACT

The  aim   of  · this    study  is   to   identify  the   role   of  accounting information.   It   intends     to   also    identify     the    importance    of accounting in  organizations.  To  reach   a  meaningful  result,   sixty (600  questionnaire    were   distributed   with   the  view  of  collecting data    from    which    fifty-seven   (57)   returned    completed   with responses.   This   was   followed.  up·  with   personal  interviews  and discussions.       The      chi-square     and      Kendal      coefficient     of concordance statistical   techniques  were  used   in  the  analysis  of the collected  data.   Two  research  hypotheses  were   postulated. Both were  accepted because they  met  the  necessary  requirements for acceptance   of  alternative  hypotheses.  The   findings  among others  are  that:  The  organizations  use  accounting  information  to formulate,    implement,    evaluate    policies    and     so    also     for forecasting, budgeting  and   control.  The   firms   are   autonomous organizations   and  all  have  a  sound   accounting system.  There   is an inevitable need  for internal audit  department  to strengthen  the accounting departments.    Based  ·     on    the    above    finding,   the researcher  wishes    to   conclude  that    accounting  information   is relevant and   should   be  used   as  a  tool   for   decision  making   in organizanons  to  effect   business  operation.  The  researcher  also recommends  that   the  organizations   should   ensure   that   a  sound accounting system    is   being    operated   for   information   to   be reliable.   Organizations   should    ensure  that    there    is   an   audit department   and   some  internal  control   system   to  strengthen  the information  generated from  accounting departments  .
