ABSTRACT
Eight species of legumes used in
feeding animals namely A. hypogaea, C. cajan, C. mucunoides, C; pubescens, C.
retusa, G. max, V. subterranea and V. unguiculata were studied. Data were
analysed from the anatomical and histochemical standpoint with intent of
ascertaining the nutritional value of these species in relation to their
anatomy. Studies were carried out on the leaf, stem and root of different
species using the simple microscope. Results from this investigation show
anatomically significant features which were found in the leaf, stem and root.
These features included the trachoma type and size, and the distribution
pattern of calcium oxalate crystals in the leaf, stem and root. These reports
were being investigated and reported for the first time in these species. The
presence of tannin and its value was assessed in these species. The utilization
of these features in the biological recognition of these species was attempted.
