ABSTRACT

The study examined the analysis of demand for poultry products in umuahia. North Local Government Area of Abia State. A total of 80 respondents were interviewed using well-structured questionnaire. Data which comprised of the information on the socio economic characteristics and other quantitative values of interest were collected using a well-structured questionnaire and personal interview. The socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequencies. The four functional forms of multiple regressions were used to determine the factors that affect demand for poultry products. Results showed that the price of poultry product, level of education and monthly income were significant and were important variables that affected the quantity demanded for poultry in the study area. The price elasticity of poultry was less than one indicating that price elasticity from the study was inelastic. The income elasticity of demand inelastic. The economic implication is that an essential commodity whose demand is not easily affected by fluctuation in the price and income in the study area. From the study, challenges such as inadequate retail outlets, price instability and poor regulation of the poultry market if addressed by the Government and poultry stake holders can help increase the demand for poultry and boost supply for the product in the study area.
