An econometric analysis of the relationship between the gross domestic product (GDP) and other selected macroeconomic variables in Nigeria:- Anidimma Chinekw D
ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study is to
investigate the major macroeconomic variable that affects the real GDP in
Nigeria. Multiple regression approach was used where GDP was regressed against
Net export, implicit deficit, inflation rate, interest rate, foreign direct
investment, exchange rate and federal government expenditure. Multicolinearity,
autocorrelation, heteroscedasticy and overall test of significant was adopted
to make this objective a success. Findings indicate that variables like
implicit deficit, federal government expenditure and exchange rate were found
to be highly correlated. The remaining uncorrelated variables were used for
further tests. Autocorrelation were found to be absent and there was evidence
of heteroscedasticity after testing with Breausch Pagan Godfrey (BPG) which was
corrected by Weighted Least Square (WLS). Based on the regression model after
transformation, it was observed that all the macroeconomic variables
contributes positively to the economic growth (GDP) of Nigeria.
