An Appraisal Of The Role Of Commercial Banks In Rural Development In Nigeria:- Nwokocha, Ikechukwu E
ABSTRACT
The main objective of this study is to ascertain
the role of commercial banks on rural development in- Nigeria. The specific
objective are to examine the trend in rural development of Nigeria and the
trend in commercial bank lending as well as to examine -the relationship between
commercial bank credit facilities and rural development. The data for this
study was obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical bulletin. The
method of data analysis adopted in this study are descriptive statistics,
multiple regression and correlation analysis. The variables considered in this
study are rural contribution to GDP, commercial bank credit to rural areas,
commercial bank loan to Agriculture, commercial bank loan to rural areas, rural
deposits with commercial bank and rural branch of commercial bank. Commercial
bank credit'was observed to have a positive significant role in the development
of the rural areas. It was therefore recommended that' there ■ should be
increased commercial bank credit facilities to increase the level of rural
development.
