An Analysis Of The Adoption Of Improved Cassava Varieties In Ikwuano Local Government Area Of Abia State
ABSTRACT
Influencing the Adoption, and the profitability of adopting imp varieties in the study area. and interviewed A total of forty cassava farmers were randomly selected with an aid of a well-structured question-naire from Ten newly created Autonomous communities out of the four original clans. Data collected were analysed using tables, percentages, frequency distribution, means, regression analysis and budgeting technique. The results of the analysis indicated that improved cassava varieties adoption was profitable over local varieties, the rate of adoption was moderate while farmers household size were significant and positively affect the adoption of improved cassava varieties in the study area. Most cassava farmers in the area are old and fairly literate with mean age of 58.5. However, owing to the identified constraints and reasons of the farmers that impede adoption rate of improved cassava varieties, it is recommended that more inputs and available resources be diverted to the adoption and production of improved cassava varieties where maximum return is obtained with minimum cost. It is also recommended that prices of purchased input be subsidized, and the acquisition and distribution of farm inputs (chemicals & fertilizers) be privatized.
