An Analysis Of Loan Size And Volume Under Nigerian Agricultural Credit And Rural Development Bank (NACRDB'S) Agricultural Loan Scheme In Abia State
ABSTRACT
The main objective of the study is to examine the volume and size of agricultural credit given to farmers in the state under the agricultural loan scheme of NACRDB (Nigeria Agricultural Credit and Development Rural Bank). A list of credit beneficiaries was obtained from the bank. The list formed the sampling frame from the list of the random sample of 44 beneficiaries was taken. Sample descriptive statistics like, percentages, frequency distribution and means were used to analyze the socio- economic characteristics of farmers, and the volume and value of credit/loan received by farmers. Regression analyses were used to determine the factors that influence the value of credit received by the beneficiaries. The study shows that credit beneficiaries in Abia State were; males, males were probably less risk averse than women also men were probably in better position to provide collateral for credit and have more time to source information, young, between 20-59 years old and energetic. Younger farmers tend to be more innovative and more likely to tryout and adopt new technologies, literate; literacy will probably put the farmers in better position to access credit. The following factors were significant determinants of the amount of credit received by the beneficiaries; level of education, saving and the value of output. It is recommended that Government should restructure their financial policies to ensure that lending institutions increase the number and amount of loans given to farmers.
