ABSTRACT

The topic of this research project was the utilization of improvisation of resource’s in the teaching and learning of biology in public secondary schools in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state. The purpose was to appraise teacher's opinions and perceptions on the levels of utilization of these improvised resources, determine challenges encountered by teachers in utilizing improvised resources in teaching and learning of biology, and ascertaining the extent utilization of improvised resources has enhanced teaching and learning of biology. Data were collected using structured questionnaire that was responded to by fifty (50) biology teachers chosen through random sampling. The data were analyzed using frequency, score and percentage. The major findings indicated that teacher's levels of utilization of improvised resources for teaching and learning of biology is very low. Findings further indicated low level interest on the part of the teachers. Physical materials are mostly improvised by teachers. Some of the challenges teachers face in improvisation include lack of technical know-how, shortage of materials for the improvisation and poor electricity power supply. Finally, findings indicated that improvisation if properly coordinated enhances teaching and learning of biology. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made which include training and retraining of teachers, school authority supporting teachers with funds to procure materials and establishment of school community friendship forum.
