The Nutrient Content Of Snacks Eaten By Adolescents In Umuahia North And Ikwuano Local Government Areas Of Abia State

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to determine the nutrient content of snacks eaten by secondary school students in Umuahia North and Ikwuano Local Government Areas of Abia State. The chemical composition carried out included protein, ash, fats, vitamin A, calcium, iron, vitamin C and carbohydrate. The already prepared snacks were compared chemically. The results showed that fish pie had the highest value in protein composition. Cornflakes and caprisonne drink had the highest value in carbohydrate composition. Highest vitamin A content was found in buns. Maltina malt drink had the highest value for calcium. Highest iron content was found in Milo. Zobo had the highest value in vitamin C and the highest ash content was found in Yale coconut cookies. Analysis of variance and standard deviation were used to compare mean scores for the different attributes and also Duncan new multiple test were used to separate the means. The chemical analysis showed that the samples were nutritionally higher in content than expected.
