Abstract

 Information isfound to be crucial in every level ofhuman life and existence. With the proliferation ofinformation in different medium and the rapidgrowth in information technology, information comes unfilteredand through differentsources andsize, as a result users encounter difficulty on how to locate, evaluate and use the information available to them. Ittherefore becomes necessary that librarians who are trainedand educated in information management andknowledge creation should device the best methodfor effective use ofthe information availablefor users. Information literacy skill is considered to be important in this information age as isfound to be the mechanism for effective information search and retrieval. This is an opinion paper which presented librarians as information professionals who should champion and take the lead in the bestmethodto use creating accessibility and use ofinformation in meeting the needs of individuals in the society. The paper also discussed the requirements, constraints andprospectsforthepromotion ofinformation literacy by librarians. In conclusion, itwas discoveredthatforthem to take the lead, theymust be information literate, innovative so as to create impact to the society through the promotion information literacyprogrammes.
