The Impact Of Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) On Funds Mobilization Strategies Of Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria

ABSTRACT

The major factor that led to the conduct of this research was the nature of the upward and downward review of the minimum rediscount rate and its effects on funds mobilization strategies of deposit money banks. Hence the research is focused on ascertaining the impact of MRR on funds mobilization strategies of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Data was collected through a secondary source by surveying already existing data from C. B. N statistical bulletin. The statistical tool used by the researcher is the correlation and simple regression analysis using T. Statistics in analysis and testing of hypothesis. Based on the result of the analysis, the following key findings were made: among which were that other money market rates correlates with the minimum rediscount rates and they are being set in line with the MRR, that the MRR has a significant relationship with banks liquidity in that raising or lowering it affects banks liquidity either by increase or decrease, the nature of the MRR determines the lending rates offered by banks in its credit creation. The following recommendation were advanced:, that it varies the minimum rediscount rate from time to time to suit in line with changing needs of the economy, Banks should ensure it observes changes in minimum rediscount rate and adhere to it in its lending and borrowing activities, The central Bank should keep its eyes open to note the effects of its monetary policy tools in order to enable it make better policies that will favour Nigeria at large. In conclusion, banks should respond to changes in minimum rediscount rate and adhere to it in order to achieve a desired economic objective.
