ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of locally available agrowastes on the cultivation of Pleurotus tuber-regium and the best way of converting agro wastes into edible biomass instead of burning them, and causing a source of pollution. Fruit bodies of the edible mushroom Pleurotus tuber-regium which are common in the tropical rainforest zone of Nigeria were produced on selected locally available agrowastes Experiments were conducted using completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 4 replications. Cassava peels were the best in supporting mycelial growth and fruitbodies formation of Pleurotus tuber-regium. This was closely followed by rice straw and vetiver grass. Results from ANOVA table showed significant differences between the treatments. That is, the different types of locally available agrowastes used had effect on the number of fruitbodies formation, weight of fruitbodies and the pileus diameter.
