ABSTRACT

This comparison of different varieties of grass for suitability in establishing soft lawn turf was conducted at the Eastern Research Farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in South Eastern Nigeria. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments replicated six times. The treatments used were Anoxopus compressus, Chrysopogon acciculatus, Paspalum notatum and Echinochloa crus galic (L) respectively and the following parameters were taken; plant height, number of tillers, number of leaves, number of roots and length of the longest root. The results obtained showed that the four treatments used were significantly different from one another. In week 1, number of leaves ranged from 183.55 to 1018.00 and was significantly correlated with the number of roots (r=0.653**). In week 8, plant height ranged from 156.71 to 535.96 and did not show any significant correlation with the longest root (-0.196).
