ABSTRACT

The study investigated students' attitude towards the use of library resources of Imo and Abia State Universities. Four research questions guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled Students' Attitude Towards the use of Library Resources Questionnaire (SATLRQ). The population of the study comprised 9400 students comprising of8065 undergraduate and 1335 postgraduate students respectively. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to determine sample size of783 consisting of 672 undergraduate and 111 postgraduate students from Imo state university, Owerri and Abia state university, Uturu. Seven hundred and eighty three (783) copies of questionnaire were distributed to the respondents and seven hundred and 'five (705) copies returned. This represented a return rate of ninety percent (90%). The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts, percentage and mean .. The findings of the study revealed that: there is 100% availability of print, non-print, fixed and variable capital personnel resources in both libraries, positive attitude towards the use of library resources. Several factors, affecting attitude of students, towards the use of library resources, as well as strategies to improve the attitude, were indicated. Foil owing these, some recommendations were made, including provision of usertailored library resources and through promotion of products and services oft he libraries.
