ABSTRACT

 The study is an attempt to investigate the Role of Human Capital Development in Economic Development in Nigeria. To achieve this objective, the study estimated a multiple regression model with Human development Index as the dependent variable , while government expenditure on health, government expenditure on education, primary school enrollment, secondary school enrollment, life expectancy and inflation are the independent variables was estimated. Unit root test was used to test the stationarity and Johansen Cointegration test was also carried out to detect the Long-run relationship among the variables of the model. Annual time series data ranging from 1981- 2018 of the selected variables were employed in the analysis. The study established that Government expenditure on education has a positive relationship with economic development. Government expenditure on health also has a positive short run impact on economic development although the variable remain statistically insignificant. The study recommends that Government should put in place the required education and training policy that would guaranteed quality schoolingforprimary and tertiary education.
