Redesigning University Library Buildings For Effective Services Delivery In Nigerian Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study:- Juliet Onuoha

ABSTRACT

The study focused on redesigning university library buildings for effective service ■ ielivery in Nigerian tertiary institutions with a focus on Taraba State University, Jalingo. It adopted a case study design with a total population of 957 library users. A simple random sampling technique was used in selecting a sample of 383 respondents. The instruments for data collection were a structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Descriptive and inferential statistics were adopted for data analysis while the interview response was analysed qualitatively. Findings show that the library building studied is properly designed and maintained, purpose-built from the start as a library, among other compositions. However, the perceived effects of the library building on library services delivery involve attracting users to the library and encouraging them to make use of the library, among other effects. Numerous challenges, such as the location of die library far from the students' residents, and improper and poor lighting system, among others, were found. In redesigning the library building, the finding shows the need to locate the library building close to students' hostels and lecture rooms, and proper ventilation within the library building, among other things. Based on the findings, the study concludes tiiat library buildings have a strong effect on library service delivery in universities, and highlights that much need to be done in the area of planning library building to continually provoke effective service delivery.
