Profile Distribution Of Potassium Along A Toposequence In Amaoba-Ime, Ikwuano L.G.A Of Abia State Nigeria

ABSTRACT

 Soil sample were collected from five profile pits along toposequences in the coastal plain sand parent material in Amaoba- Ime in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State. The study evaluated the forms and distribution of potassium in the five soil profiles. The value for NH4OAC Exchangeable potassium (K) was highest in the lower slope (D) with a mean of 0.202 and least in the middle slope, which had a mean value of 0.146. Other forms of K 4-1NO3extractable K, difficultly extracted K, 1-Id extractable K, K reserved and total K analyzed followed the same pattern of distribution as NH4OAC exchangeable K. Water soluble K had the highest value in the crest and least in the middle slope. NH4OAC exchangeable K correlated significantly with ITNO3extractable K, HC1 extractable K, served K and total K at 0.01 level of significant but has no significant con-elation with sand, silt and clay in the soil. The levels and distribution of potassium in this soil portrays the need to understand the rate and amount of potassium fertilizer that should be applied down a toposequence.
