Prevalence And Seasonal Variation Of Foreign Bodies In The Rumen And Reticulum Of Cattle Slaughtered In Ubakala Abattoir:- Enogwe Johnson K

ABSTRACT Ubakala abattoir were examined for foreign bodies. 70.2% ofthem were found to be positive for foreign bodies. Indigestible foreign bodies were more prevalent in dry season (56%) than in the raining season (44%).The types of foreign bodies encountered in both seasons include thread of feedsack, polythene, raffia, cloth, sachets, rope, metals, stones, seeds, batter}' head and plastic in 54.8%, 14.9%, 8.6%, 6.8%, 4.8%, 3.3%, 2.4%, 2.0%, 2.0%, 0.2% and 0.2% respectively.304 (67.6%) of the foreign bodies was located in the rumen, 5 (1.1%) was located in the reticulum, while 6 animals (1.3%) had both ruminal and reticular foreign bodies. Majority (48.1%) of the animals slaughtered were in good body condition, 0.3%, 2.9%, 43.0% and 5.7% were in very poor, poor, satisfactory and very good conditions respectively.
