Abstract

Library and Information Science professionals are traditionally charged with the responsibility of information provision and services delivery at the institutional level. They require necessary administrative, technical and technological competencies to enable them deliver services effectively and efficiently. However, it is observed that LIS professional in Nigeria lack competencies needed for information services delivery. The paper therefore, examined building the competencies of LIS professionals for effective information services delivery 'and sustainable development. The paper discussed the concepts: competencies and LIS professionals. It identified the types of competencies needed by US professionals; challenges in acquiring these competencies such as the challenge of attitude, lack of interest in competencies building and obsolete curriculum of library schools and concludes by suggesting practical strategies for developing competencies of US professionals such as academic qualifications, acquiring working experience, training and development among others.
