Abstract

The paper exposes that academic libraries are theatres of academic research and serial materials play pivotal role in academic research. The paper therefore, inquires into the meaning of academic library, serial materials and research. It also mentions some library materials that fit into the category of serials such as journals, periodicals, newspapers etc and goes further to . outline the functions and importance of such serial materials in carrying out any form of academic research. It also discusses new trends in the management and utilization of serial materials using information and communication technologies. The paper therefore, concludes that there is the need to properly acquire, organize and manage them using information technologies in other to utilize their intellectual contents for the optimization of academic research.
