ABSTRACT This study examined the Motivation and StaffProductivity in Academic Libraries: A Study of Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) Library. The study was guided by five research questions as well as five objectives which cover the motivation techniques adopted in the MOUAU Library and the extent and ways through which they influence the productive capacities ofthe library staff A descriptive survey design was adoptedfor this study, with a population of sixty nine (69) library staff which stands as a compendium of the professional, Para- professional and Support Staff cadre. A complete census was usedfor this study because the population was manageable; hence, there was no need for sampling. The instrumentfor data collection was a questionnaire titled: Questionnaire on Motivation and Staff Productivity in Academic Libraries (QMSPAL). The questionnaire was designed in line with the four point likert rating scale. Sixty (100%) copies ofthe questionnaire were administered out of which fifty-seven (57) was correctly filled and returned revealing a response rate of 95%. The data for the study was collected and analyzed using the mean and standard deviation. The findingsfrom the study revealed that the MOUAU Library has adopted some staff motivation techniques which includes; increase in salary structure, a conducive work environment, conferences, seminars and workshops, non-monetary incentives and recognition ofstaff efforts. It also revealed the challenges associated with staff motivation which encompasses: lack of knowledge and training ofthe staff, unavailability ofrewards/incentives, poor salary structure, etc. Furthermore, the study recommended as solution to the challenges; provision of rewards/incentives to staff, payment ofsalaries/wages as at when due, provision ofgood working environment, good communication of staff, provision of good facilities/equipment and good rewardforperformance.
