ABSTRACT

This research examined the management of students’ projects, theses and dissertations in Imo State University Library'. It was guided by five (5) specific objectives with corresponding research questions. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Questionnaire on Management of Students’ Projects, Theses and Dissertations (MSPTDQ) was used for data collection, while the descriptive statistical method such as mean and standard deviation were used to analyse the data. The criteria for accepting or rejecting any item of the questionnaire was 2.50 mean score. The findings from this study have revealed that mandatory submission by fresh graduates(students), mandatory submission by student’s department, mandatory submission by students supervisor were the modes of acquiring students’ projects in the Imo State University Library. In addition the study revealed the organizational practice of students’ projects, theses and dissertations in Imo State University Library, which include: stamping ofstudents’ projects, theses and dissertations, arranged according to the type of degree acquired, arranged according to student’s discipline, among other practices. The result reveals that: ensuring proper ventilation within the section, cleaning and dusting ofthe materials, cross-checking the materials after use, periodic fumigation of the reference section, prohibiting eating habit in the reference section, spontaneous check on users, among others, are the preservation techniques adopted in the library studied. Lack of constant power supply, limited space, improper handling of project work, lack ofstorage facilities, delay in processing them, lack of digitization ofthese materials, and lack of institutional policy were among the problems associated with the practice. Solutions to these problems were as identified.^ Finally, the study recommends that the management of Imo State University' Library should ensure that the preservation techniques should be more efficient, for instance, is the installation ofCCTV cameras and digitization ofthese materials.
