Library User Education in Tertiary Institution in Nigeria: A Case Study of Abia State University, Uturu:- Uwandu, Ezinne F

ABSTRACT

 The research is a descriptive survey on the Library User Education In Tertiary Institution In Nigeria: A Case Study OfAbia State University, Uturu. The major purpose was to ascertain the extent oflibrary user education in tertiary institution in Nigeria: a case study ofAbia state university, Uturu. It was guided byfive purposes ofthe study andfive research questions. The study has a population of25,232 regular undergraduate students in 7faculties with a sampled size of 380 respondents were selected using proportional random sampling technique which was totally enumeratedfor the study. The instrumentfor data collection was a questionnaire titled Library User Education Questionnaire (LUEQ). Mean and standard deviation were used in the analysis ofthe research questions. Findings revealed that: lack of confidence in the use of the library, lack of adequately equipped school library and total dependence on class notes and textbooks were the major constraints of library user education in the Unity schools. Strategies suggested to deal with these constraints were found to consist mainly of establishment ofmodern school libraries, teaching the use oflibrary andprovision oflibrary and information resources to Unity school students. The findings ofthis study have a number of implications for education in general, school librarians, teachers and secondary school curriculum planners in particular. From the above findings it was strongly recommended that due to the immense benefits ofLUS acquisition, Government should give urgent attention to the provision oflibrary resources such as establishment ofmodern school libraries, provision of current library resources among othersfor the enhancement of library skills acquisition. Library programmes should also be adequately planned, integrated in the curriculum and executed by librarians and teachers in these schools.
