Influence Of Selected Of Students' Factors On Mathematics Performance In Arochukwu Local Government Area, Abia State

ABSTRACT

 The study investigated the influence of selected students factors on mathematics performance of senior secondary school students in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. The variablcs were study habit, attitude and interest of student iii mathematics. ftc stud adopted lix-Post Facto research design. A sample size of 1 8] students was drawn from the selected public secondary schools in Arochukwu. [he instruments used for data collection were questionnaire and students' achievement test titled: Students' N1 athematics Performance Questionnaire (SMPQ) and Students' Objective Mathcmatics Performance Test (SOMPT). The questionnaire comprised of 1 5 items while the objective test comprised of 20 queStions. Three research questions and three research hypotheses guided the study. Cronbach's alpha coefhie len \\ as used for the reliability given a reliability coefficient of 0.73.'i'hc data were analyzed using tiequencv table and percentages in answering the research questions while eh i-sq uare test was used in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of signi ficaut. the results revealed that students' study habits in studying mathematics was significant \viule interest of students and students' attitude towards studying mathematics and academic achievement were not significant. Based on the findings, it was recommended that teaclirs should device modern methods of teaching to stir up students' interest in learning each -of the various subjects. Also, teachers and parents should try and build self- confidence in their students and children respectively as to boost students' interest in learning and improve their attitude towards school.
