ABSTRACT

This study investigated the influence of the competency level of teachers on the academic performance of computer science students in external examination in Umuahia north local government area of Abia State. It was descriptive in nature and involved 20 teachers and all the students of secondary schools. The instrument used was a COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHER COMPETENCY LEVEL QUESTIONAIRE (CSTCLQ) and junior secondary school certificate examination result for three years, 2011, 2012, 2013 respectively. The teacher's competence and students academic performance was analyzed using a frequency count, mean, percentage and a t-test. From the result obtained it was evident that students in Umuahia North perform average in computer and teachers competence in computer is low due to some challenges in the acquisition of computer skills and hence influence the performance of students in both internal and external examinations.
