ABSTRACT
Education ads as a [oimalivn agent, shaping the character, activities and values of a child. It also acts as a transmission agent passing knowledge, experiences and skills from one generation to another. Books play vital roles in aiding a child to learn. It provides necessary ingredients for a child's intellectual needs, interests and aspirations. A book according to Chambers 20th Century Dictionary is “a collection of sheets of paper etc. bound together or made into a roll, either printed, written on, or blank, as a source of instruction”, a child needs to learn how to decipher written and printed words. However, books recommended for children should be selected with caution al some books create negative impact. What is a good book? This paper tries to examine the qualities of a good book as well as its importance in the child’s education. II will also highlight the paucity state of books in our schools.
