ABSTRACT

The impact of acute exposure of karate ( Lambda cyhalothrin pyicthriod insecticide evaluated during a 4 -- day exposure period at 20pprn, 40ppm, ôOppni and 80ppm to "1-leteroclarias'' fingerlings showed the 96-hL.C50 as 25. I2ppin. The threshold value as 25. 11 ppm.The gills of' the exposed fish analysed showed a significance decrease  in all the major cat ions and anions (Na Ci. Cad ' . k - Mg2 at (p: .U5 ) Although there was no total inhibition of uptake of the eations and anions studied. the results revealed that the uptake of these cations and anionS (Na . (T CaT ,k [g ) increased rapidly during the 24hr penoci and dropped al 481w and 721w and gradually increased at the end of 96hr, showing that during the exposure priod the lisli stood in upright pos on with theti' snouts al)ove the water surface gasping for air. Other behavioural characteristics of the exposed fish were peel lug of skin, initial increase in opercula movement. eurval ure of the body. loss of balance, erratic swimming. qu1et1ess, and finally death. This result therefore -ecommends that this insecticide (karate) should he applied appropnately at a reconiiiendecl close to avoid damage to both target and non4arget organisms.
