ABSTRACT

The purpose ofthe study was to assess the effect of government expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria (1982 - 2017). The study identified two specific objectives with two corresponding research questions and hypotheses. Secondary data obtained from CBN Statistical Bulletin (2015) on variables such as agriculture government expenditure on agriculture and salaries and wages and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (as a proxy for economic growth) was used in the study. The data covered the period of26 years ranging from 1982 to 2017. The collected data were analyzed using ordinary least square (OLS) multiple regression method. The findings revealed that government expenditure on agriculture has significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. It also revealed that government expenditure on salaries and wages has significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. Based on the findings and conclusions ofthe study, it was recommended among others that government should provide adequate fund for agriculture and salaries and wages should be paid promptly.
