ABSTRACT

The effect of anthropogenic activities and domestic waste on water surface quality of water side Aba south L.G.A of Abia state. Was evaluated to ascertain the suitability of the water for domestic purposes. Water samples were collected at two different times (morning and evening hours) from three different locations of the river. The water parameter were measured and compared with WHO and FAO standards. The results obtained showed that the morning and afternoon PH (6.26 and 7.4), salinity (138.33 and 129.77), Calcium (3.32 and 3.74), Sulphur (30.76 and 34.23), chloride (36.24 and 38.23) and phosphorus (3.53 and 6.96) respectively. The pH value from the river lies slightly below the permissible limit. Electrical productivity value and chloride values of the river sample lied in the range of the medium salinity zone; therefore water of this river can be used for drinking purposes, irrigation and other domestic use in the area. Though the water should be subjected to some treatment processes, especially raising the pH value and burning o a temperature of 100°c before being used
