ABSTRACT:
The efficacy of 5% Monodra seed Petroleum ether extract (5% MSEE), 5% Jatropha seed petroleum ether extract (5% JSEE), 5% Monodroa seed water extract (5% MSWE), 5% Japtropha seed water extract and a standard synthetic insecticide, Lamdacyhaiothrin (25g a.i./ha) were evaluated in the field during the early season fir their effectiveness in the control of spp, the major insect pests of Okra. All treatments, except the 5% JSWE, significantly reduced (P =0.5) the population of the pests with Lamdacyhalothrin proving more superior in efficacy. The ranking of effectiveness in the control of Podagrica spp was; Lamdacyhaiothrin > 5% MSEE > 5% JSEE > JSWE > Control. The Lamdacyhalothrin had a higher resuduak effect when compared with the other treatments, while the ether extracts had greater residual effects when compared with the water extracts and control. There was significant difference in the total fruit yield (t - I) = ( tons ha 1) obtained in the Lamdacyhalothrin-treated plots and other treatments; and the yields from the plots treated with the ether extracts of the two botanivals were also significantly higher than the control. The correlation coefficient (r = - 0.96) showed that the total fruit yield produced were affected negatively by the level of defoliation on the leaves. The ether extracts of the two botanicals showed good promise as substitute for the area. Perhaps, higher dosages of the products and closer spray regime may improve their efficacy.
