ABSTRACT

Essentials of Continuous Assessment is a text-book aimed at providing teachers and students who are concerned with continuous assessment programmes with continuous assessment programmes with a concise reference material. This book becomes very essential, especially now the Federal Government of Nigeria stated in the National Policy on Education that the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and the Senior School Certificate (SSC) shall be based on continuous assessment. This policy statement is an indication that all teachers-experienced and those who recently qualified as teachers should have first hand information on what continuous assessment is all about. Student teachers at the teacher training colleges and the university undergraduates, in no small measure need the knowledge of continuous assessment and its implementation procedures. The university lecturers and lecturers at the colleges of education and other teacher training institutions equally need a simple and easy to understand text-book on continuous assessment. This book "Essentials of Continuous Assessment" bridged the gap forthis felt need. The text covered essential part ofthe course such as meaning and characteristics of continuous assessment, relevance of continuous assessment to the learners and the teachers. The book equally treated some basic statistics useful for effective continuous assessment practice. Record keeping and reporting of students performance were deeply treated in a simple and direct methods. Other vital components of continuous assessment such as operating continuous assessment and problems and prospects in carrying out of continuous assessment were equally explained in greater details. This book has been written of adherence to the minimum standards for continuous assessment as stipulated by the National University Commission 9nuc) AND THE National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), for first degree, NCE and diploma programmes. Although some textbooks have been written in this course, they have not fully handled or addressed the problems to students in the understanding and comprehending of this subject. Essentials of Continuous Assessment has gone a step further by providing examples in the difficult areas authors usually gloss over, which constitute very serious problems to the learners. For instance, when solving some statistical problems, the authors carefully did not jump over any step, assuming that the learners must have known them. Rather each step was made clear and precise for easy understanding. The information in this work is not exhaustive.
