Emerging Trends In The Development Of School Libraries In Nigeria:- Chinyere, Okezie A.

ABSTRACT

 Although traditional school libraries are still prevalent in Nigeria, the focus of this paper is the on going transformation process by which the school library in Nigeria is developing to assume its new status as a multi-media educational center in line with the spreading global trend It posits that until the last 10 years oft he 20 century, the average school library in Nigeria had not developed beyond the status of a bookstore, used intermittently as a reading room by pupils anti students of primary and secondary schools. The contention however is that there is growing, a movement toward the new concept of the school library as an integrated learning center containingfaci/itiesfor individual as well as group learning, using all the modern communication media. The paper ascertains the factors that have brought about this change. These are: - changes in educational approach, curricular and technology as well as sociological and cultural changes. It also highlights the facets of the school library that have been directly and positively affected by this change.
