ABSTRACT

The study was designed to measure the effects of l-IIV/AIDS on farm households in Umuahia South L.G.A of Abia State. Multistage sampling techniques was adopted. This involves a random selection of Umuahia South L.G.A to capture the area. Also random sampling techniques was used to select the communities and respondents. A total of 80 respondents were selected with each of the 8 Autonomous Communities having 10 respondence. The study was restricted to farm households. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistic were used to capture the socio-econornic characteristics of the respondents. First the result shows that the mean age of farmers within the range of 60 -- 79 is 37 years and also the mean of households size was also Ibund to be 9 persons per household. Majority of the respondents, about 75 percent had formal education. The imiltiple regression analysis was also employed in addition to probit regression estimation technique. The result of the multiple regression techniques was used to measure that effect of HIV/AJDS and other variables on farm household output revealed that age of farmers, farm size, level of education, households size, cost of health status, labour cost and years of experience are statistically significant. Equally, the probit reession estimation technique shows that variables household size, cost of hired labour, gender and protective sex practice were the factors that determine the number of (leath due to HI V/AiDS in the households were statistically significant. Appropriate recommendations were proffered with respect to their findings
