ABSTRACT

The major aim of this research work was to find out the effects of Corporate Social Responsibility (economic, legal, ethical and discretionary) on organizational performance (profitability, productivity, market shares, sales volume): a study of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana-Kogi State and Nigerian Breweries Plc, Enugu State. The specific objectives were to: determine the effects of economic (skill acquisition) social responsibility on profitability, ascertain the relationship between legal (payment of taxes) social responsibility on productivity, examine the effects of ethical (environmental protection) social responsibility on market shares and to find out the effects of discretionary (infrastructural development) social responsibility on sales volume of Dangote Cement, Plc Obajana and Nigerian Breweries Plc, Enugu. Descriptive survey design and ex-post facto research design was adopted for this research, while the sources of data were primary and secondary sources. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (simple percentage, mean and frequency, trend analysis and simple linear regression analysis). The findings indicated that the independent variables (economic, legal, ethical and discretionary) social responsibility had significant effects on the dependent variable (profitability, productivity, market shares and sales volume). The research recommended among other factors that every corporate business organization should have corporate social responsibility (CSR) departments, there should be a law mandating corporate business organizations to invest some percentages of their profit to host communities and other stake holders, to produce environmental friendly products, to be prompt in tax payment and to comply with factory inspectors. This dissertation will contribute in no small measure to future researchers on effects of corporate social responsibility on organizational performance.
