ABSTRACT
60 day old turkey poults whose initial body weights (g) were measured were used in a study to evaluate the effect of type and level of supplementation of oil on carcass of turkey poults. The experiment was designed using a 2 factor factorial in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The oil types used were palm oil (P0) and groundnut oil (GNO) respectively at 2, 5 and 8% levels of supplementation. Each type of oil was used in formulating 3 diets giving a total of 6 diets of about 28% CP and 2800 Kcallkg of Metabolizable energy. The 6 diets were assigned to 6 treatment groups of 10 poults per treatment. Each treatment was replicated twice and feeding trial lasted for 8 weeks. The results obtained from the study revealed that the dietary treatments had no significant effect (P> 0. 05) on the initial weight (g) and percentage mortality of the turkey poults. Similarly, the crude fiber of the carcasses obtained during the proximate analysis was not affected (P > 0. 05) by dietary treatments. Wing, Kidney and intestine were also not affected significantly (P > 0. 05). Other parameters (Final weight, average daily feed intake, average daily weight gain and feed conversion ratio; dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, ash and nitrogen free extract; percentage dress weight, breast weight, thigh, drum, total visceral and liver) were all statistically different (P < 0. 05). Final weight favored P0 at 2% (831.25 + 43.74) and was least for P0 at 5% (668.75 ± 93.74). Dry matter content of experimental diets was better in P0 at 2% and least for P0 at 5%. Finally, dress weight (%) was better in P0 at 8% (61. 82+0.12) and least for GNO at 2% (52.23±1 .91) inclusion.
