Effect Of The Current Economic Recession On The Performance Of Financial Markets In Nigeria. A Study Of The Nigerian Stock Exchange (Nse).

ABSTRACT

This study explores the effect of mergers and acquisitions on the growth of

deposit money banks in Nigeria. Descriptive ex-post facto research design is

adopted for the study and gathered through the use of secondary data from the

study area. The study adopts one bank for the purpose ofproximity, convenience

and non-probability. The adopted bank is UBA based on its multi-functional

characteristic as a deposit money bank in Nigeria for the period 2000-2016.

The study adopts ANOVA (analysis of variance) and multiple regression as the

statistical tool for analyzing data. The key findings of the study show that

increase in capital base has a signicant relationship with the shareholders'

wealth, in line with the first specic objective which is to determine the

relationship between increase in merged bank 's capital base and shareholders'

wealth. Further findings reveal that profit before tax and revenue also has a

significant relationship with the shareholders' wealth. That is in line with the

second and third objectives of the study Based on the findings of this study from

the test of three hypotheses earlier formulated, it is recommended that Bank

management should give proper attention to scope and scale of economies;

eliminate redundancy, duplication, corrupt and inefficient staff
