ABSTRACT

This paper examines the effect of social indicators and basic needs on economic growth in . Nigeria. The objective of the study is to determine the effects of social indicators and basic needs on economic growth in Nigeria, to determine the long-run relationship that exists and causal effect ofsocial indicators and basic needs on economic growth in Nigeria. Secondary data were collected based on the model used in the research work and unit root test was conducted on the data to test their stationary, after which we perform co-integration test to analyze the long run relationship among the variables the ECM would be applied to estimate the speed of adjustment and causality test to examine the long run causal relationship between variables From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that there is no significant effect of social indicators and basic needs on economic growth in Nigeria within the years under review. The study therefore recommend that there is a need for government to create enabling an environment for domestic investment to rise Government should budget more money for educational sector since a decrease in education expenditure resulted to decrease in the economy and that Government at all levels and NGOs should do everything within their power to reduce poverty rate as increase in poverty rate results to decrease in economic growth.
