Effect Of Land Tenure System On Agricultural Productivity In Umuahia North Local Government Area Of Abia State

ABSTRACT

 This study investigated the effect of land tenure on Agricultural Productivity in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State. •The broad objective of this study was to determine the effect of land tenure system on Agricultural productivity in the study area. A well structured questionnaire was used to collect the date from 100 farmers in the study area selected from the two clans (Ohuhu and Ibeku) of Umuahia North Local Government Area. The primary data was obtained from questionnaire mentioned and the secondary data was sourced from texts, journals and other research works. Multiple regression analysis, descriptive statistical tools such as percentage, table and frequencies and fragmentation index were used to analyzed the data collected. Result of the regression showed that the level of education, farming experience, capital and labour are statistically significant at 5%, 1%, I % and 5% respectively. Though the level of education and farming experience were negative but contributed a lot to the level of productivity. Results also showed that Age of farmers, household size, farming experience, level of education and tenure duration also affected egricultural productivity. The different land holding system were also identified in the study area as well as the extent of land fragmentation using the fragmentation index. The major constraints faced by farmers include; insecurity of tenure, small sizes of plots, inability to do land improvement, inability to decide freely what to grow and high cost of acquiring renting land. Finally government should make law banning the splitting of a particular size of land also they should encourage financial institution for capital improvement of farmers.
