Effect Of Internal Control System On Bank Performance In Nigeria (2007-2016)

ABSTRACT

This  study  seeks  to  examine  the  Effect  of  internal  control  system  on  bank performance in Nigeria,  2007-2016.  The central bank of Nigeria reported that the backward development in Nigeria was attributable to weaknesses in the internal control systems of the banks.      The  attempt  to  put   an  end  to  this  economic degradation gave rise to this research topic. Three null hypotheses were stated to critically  examine  the  effect  of  the  dependent  variables  on  the  independent variables. Ex-postfacto research design was adopted, while the simple regression analysis of OLS was used to analyze the data gathered for  this study. The result findings  revealed that internal control system has a positive significant effect on the profit after tax,  liquidity and return on asset of banks in Nigeria. Hence the prevention   and  detection  of  frauds   are  basically  the  responsibility  of  the management through the establishment of an effective and efficient internal control system. Based on these findings, it was thus recommended that banks should try to have an effective internal audit department, which should be headed by a qualifiedAccountant. In addition, the Accountant should be responsible to the managing director or a higher authority in the bank.
