ABSTRACT

This  study examined the influence of different mating methods, namely stud mating. pen mating and artificial insemination on early growth trails of' our local chicks. thirty (30) female and six (6) male local birds were used as the plait stock, they were randomly assigned and subjected to the three different mating methods using a mating ratio of 5: the mattings produced 10 chicks for each method, giving a total of 30 chicks, From which data were collected on growth parameters, namely keel length, thigh length, shank length, breast length, body girth, wing length, daily feed intake and body weight. Owing to the contributions of poultry industry on the economic and social 4 development of countries, many researches have been carried out and recommendations made on ways of improving the performances of birds, especially local breeds in terms of yield. Over the years, researches have been based on improvement in feed formulations and genetic breeds. Not much research has been carried out on the area of mating potentials on the local birds. The effect of mating methods on the early growth trait of local birds is paramount at the - present age and this therefore, forms the basis for this research work.
