ABSTRACTA field experiment was conducted between April and September 2004 at Umudike to determine the effects of intercropping 4 vegetables cowpea varieties with cocoyam on growth and yield of the four varieties of vegetable cowpea ("Akidi ani", "Akidi enu", IT86F — 204-1, 1T81D — 1228- 14.). The experiment was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Results obtained showed that 1T86F-204-1 gave significantly more pods than "Acadian" under sole cropping. The varieties of vegetable cowpea did not differ in number of pods produced under intercropping. Compared to sole cropping, intercropping significantly reduced the number of pods per plant in 1T86F- 204-1. Intercropping with cocoyam did not significantly affect growth and pod yield of the vegetable cowpea varieties.
